Internal Medicine Residency

Our Program

Resident Group Picture with Dr. Riffle

The Internal Medicine residency program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and approved for 18 positions, with six (6) residents in each PGY class. We accept both DO and MD. applicants through ERAS. Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center does not sponsor visas.

Academics

Residents are expected to attend morning report daily from 7:00 AM until 8:00 AM each weekday with the only exception being the residents who are on rotations outside of Poplar Bluff, vacation, or leave of absence. In addition to morning report, we have weekly noon conferences that consist of board review, administration team, wellness, etc.

Residents participate in routine simulation labs scheduled throughout the three years of training. In these labs, residents learn important skill sets such as team-based code and rapid responses, point-of-care ultrasound, skin biopsies and skin punches, and line placements.

Curriculum

The block diagram is structured to give residents the best experience possible while they are in our program. We have added the majority of our elective rotations to the third year of residency so that residents may begin to think about individualizing their training to ensure that they can begin planning for fellowships and life after residency.

Postgraduate Year 1 Residents

Postgraduate Year 1
PGY-1 residents will complete a robust schedule including inpatient rotations with two different teams, night float, ICU, Emergency, Cardiology, Pulmonology, Nephrology, and an elective. During this year, most residents choose a combination of Gynecology and Anesthesia as their elective so that they can ensure competence in intubations, pap smears, etc.

Postgraduate Year 1 Residents

Postgraduate Year 2
The PGY-2 year includes inpatient rotations, night float, ICU, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Cardiology, Emergency, and an elective. These rotations are all done in Poplar Bluff, Missouri unless the resident chooses to do an elective rotation in another facility (with Program approval and completion of paperwork).

Postgraduate Year 3 Residents

Postgraduate Year 3
During the PGY-3 year, residents will complete rotations on the inpatient floors, outpatient continuity clinic, geriatrics, ICU, Hematology/Oncology, Endocrinology, Infectious Disease and elective. Our Endocrinology and Infectious Disease rotations are in Cape Girardeau, Missouri where residents will work with Dr. Sheikh and Dr. Lavalle (respectively) in their clinics and seeing inpatients. During this rotation, PBRMC provides an apartment where residents can stay while they are on these rotations to avoid travel inconveniences.

The elective rotations can be within Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center or residents can arrange an away rotation at the location of their choice (with Program approval and completion of paperwork). These rotations help to individualize resident’s learning experience and allow them to choose rotations that will provide them with experience to add to their CVs for fellowships, if they choose to apply.
